The V Sports Project

“One Vision. Seven Clubs. One Pathway.”

V SPORTS LAUNCHES ‘THE AFRICAN PROJECT’ – A NEW ERA OF GLOBAL FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT

Birmingham, England – V Sports is proud to announce the launch of The African Project, an ambitious long-term football initiative that aims to redefine the way African talent is identified, developed and nurtured within the global game.

Built upon a network of seven clubs across Europe and Africa, The African Project represents a commitment to creating sustainable success through investment in people, infrastructure and opportunity. It is a vision that extends far beyond transfers and trophies. It is a commitment to building a footballing ecosystem that gives Africa’s brightest young players a genuine pathway from local academies to the very highest levels of European football.

At the heart of this vision is V Sports Chairman Nassef Sawiris, whose belief in long-term planning and sustainable growth has already transformed Aston Villa into one of England’s most ambitious clubs. Today, that vision expands beyond Birmingham and into a truly international project.

“Football’s greatest resource has always been its people,” said Sawiris. “Africa continues to produce extraordinary footballers, yet too many journeys are left to chance. Through the V Sports network, we intend to create a structure where the continent’s finest talents are identified early, developed properly and supported throughout every stage of their careers. This is not simply an investment in football clubs. It is an investment in the future of African football.”

The African Project brings together seven clubs, each fulfilling a unique role within the V Sports family. While every club will maintain its own identity, history and ambitions, all seven will operate under a shared football philosophy built on player development, intelligent recruitment and long-term sustainability.

The network will consist of Aston Villa in England, Vitória S.C. in Portugal, GAIS in Sweden, FC Annecy in France, Real Unión Club in Spain, ZED FC in Egypt and ASEC Mimosas in Ivory Coast.

Together, these clubs will form one of the most comprehensive player development pathways in world football.

Unlike traditional multi-club ownership models that often focus purely on commercial opportunities, V Sports intends to create genuine footballing synergy between every club. Recruitment departments will share scouting intelligence, performance departments will exchange best practice and every club will adopt a common footballing identity designed to prepare players for progression throughout the network.

The objective is not to stockpile talent. The objective is to develop it.

Africa has long been recognised as one of football’s richest talent pools. Players from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Mali, Guinea, Cameroon, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and dozens of other nations continue to shape the modern game. The African Project aims to ensure that the next generation of stars are not only discovered, but provided with a carefully managed pathway that maximises both their footballing development and their personal growth.

Every player will have an individual journey.

Some may move directly from Africa into one of the network’s European clubs.

Others may require additional seasons developing within different leagues before reaching the Premier League.

Some may become legends in Portugal, Sweden or France without ever playing for Aston Villa.

Every pathway is different.

Every success strengthens the network.

To support this ambitious vision, V Sports is pleased to confirm the first appointments to its football leadership group.

Former Ivory Coast captain Yaya Touré has been appointed Head Coach of Aston Villa, leading the flagship club within the V Sports family. Touré’s experience at the very highest level of European football, combined with his understanding of African player development, makes him the ideal figure to lead the project from Villa Park.

Former South African international Benni McCarthy will take charge of Vitória S.C., a club viewed internally as the network’s primary gateway into European football. Portugal has long established itself as one of the world’s leading development environments, and Vitória will play a central role in preparing young players for elite competition.

At FC Annecy, former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has been entrusted with overseeing the French chapter of the project. Annecy’s ambition is to get promoted then establish itself within Ligue 1 before competing regularly for European qualification, providing another crucial step within the V Sports pathway.

Swedish side GAIS will be led by former Nigerian captain John Obi Mikel, whose wealth of experience at club and international level will be invaluable as the club seeks to establish itself as one of Scandinavia’s leading destinations for emerging talent. Competing in Sweden also provides young players with an excellent environment to gain first-team experience while competing for European football.

V Sports is also delighted to announce that African football icon Samuel Eto’o has accepted the position of Head Coach at Real Unión Club. Although Real Unión will not be directly managed as part of the day-to-day V Sports football operation, the club remains a valued member of the wider network and represents one of its most exciting long-term projects. Starting in the Spanish fourth tier, Real Unión will be tasked with climbing the Spanish football pyramid while offering another important destination for player development.

Further managerial appointments will be announced in due course for ZED FC in Egypt and ASEC Mimosas in Ivory Coast. Both clubs will occupy vital positions within the African Project and will play a central role in identifying and nurturing the continent’s next generation of footballers before they progress throughout the wider V Sports family.

To demonstrate its commitment to this vision, V Sports can also confirm that significant financial backing has been committed across the network. Rather than pursuing short-term success through marquee signings alone, investment will focus on scouting infrastructure, academy development, coaching, sports science and carefully targeted recruitment of the continent’s most promising young players.

The ambition is clear.

To build the world’s leading football development network centred around African talent.

To create opportunities where others see obstacles.

To establish pathways where others rely on chance.

And ultimately, to prove that sustainable success can be achieved by developing exceptional people as well as exceptional footballers.

This is not simply the beginning of another Football Manager save.

This is the beginning of a long-term footballing vision.

One network.

Seven clubs. Four that we will control.

One philosophy.

One future.

Welcome to The African Project.
