John Obi Mikel Delivers European Football to Gothenburg
While the rest of the V Sports network continues through the middle of the 2026/27 campaign, one club has already written its chapter for the year. Thanks to the unique March-to-December Swedish calendar, GAIS have completed their 2026 Allsvenskan season, and what a story it has been.
Twelve months ago there were more questions than answers. When John Obi Mikel arrived midway through the previous campaign, he inherited a squad assembled for a different style of football. There was little opportunity to implement his philosophy, no pre-season to mould the squad in his image, and little time on the training pitch before competitive fixtures arrived. GAIS showed flashes of promise after his arrival, but as the season wore on the players understandably ran out of energy. Results tailed off, the club slipped down the table, and many outside the V Sports network questioned whether the ambitious appointment had been the right one.
Inside the club, however, there was never any panic.
The coaching staff understood that genuine progress would only come once Mikel had the chance to work with the squad properly. This year there would be no excuses.
A Pre-Season That Changed Everything
The foundations for this remarkable campaign were laid long before a ball was kicked in the Allsvenskan.
GAIS embarked on an intensive eight-week pre-season programme that culminated in a training camp in Egypt, where the players immersed themselves in John Obi Mikel’s tactical ideas. Sessions focused on aggressive pressing, intelligent positional play, rapid transitions and developing the technical confidence required to dominate possession. Just as importantly, the squad spent valuable time together away from the pressures of competitive football, creating the chemistry that would define their season. By the time GAIS returned to Sweden they looked like an entirely different football team. The passing was sharper, the pressing more coordinated and the confidence flowing throughout the squad. Supporters immediately noticed the difference during the opening weeks, but few could have predicted what would follow.
Flying Out of the Blocks
GAIS started the campaign with an intensity rarely seen from the club in recent years. Rather than battling around mid-table as many pundits expected, they immediately established themselves among Sweden’s strongest sides. Week after week they collected points through exciting attacking football, climbing steadily into the top five. What initially looked like an impressive run of form gradually became something much more significant. Instead of fading away as the fixtures accumulated, GAIS continued improving. The defensive structure became increasingly difficult to break down, while the front line developed into one of the league’s most entertaining attacking units. By the midway point of the campaign, European qualification was no longer an impossible dream.
Defying Expectations
As the summer progressed, GAIS found themselves sitting inside the top three. Almost everyone expected them to fall away. Every difficult away trip was viewed as the moment reality would strike. Every fixture against the league’s traditional heavyweights was labelled the beginning of the collapse. Instead, John Obi Mikel’s side simply kept winning football matches. The consistency became the team’s greatest strength. Rather than relying on individual brilliance, GAIS repeatedly found different match winners. The squad embraced rotation, younger players continued to develop and the tactical identity never wavered regardless of the opponent. By the final whistle of the season, the impossible had become reality. A magnificent third-place finish secured qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League, marking one of the greatest achievements in the club’s modern history and providing another huge milestone in the V Sports project.
European nights are returning to Gothenburg.
Players Who Made the Difference
A successful season is never built on one individual, and GAIS enjoyed outstanding performances throughout the squad.
Manuel Baldé
The ever-present goalkeeper continued his remarkable development. Now 24 years old, Baldé started every single league fixture, providing the calm authority that every successful team requires. His shot-stopping, command of the penalty area and leadership from the back gave GAIS an excellent platform throughout the campaign. His performances have not gone unnoticed internationally either, with the goalkeeper now establishing himself for Guinea-Bissau, earning thirteen senior international caps. He increasingly looks like another V Sports success story.
Alysson Edward
If one player embodied GAIS’ attacking identity this season, it was Aston Villa loanee Alysson Edward. Operating from the right wing, the Brazilian was simply sensational, finishing the campaign with 11 goals and 13 assists. His direct running, creativity and ability to produce decisive moments in the biggest matches made him the obvious choice for the club’s Player of the Season award. Villa will undoubtedly be delighted by his development, but GAIS supporters will be hoping there is somehow another chapter to come.
Semou Sane
Annecy loanee Semou Sane perfectly balanced the opposite flank. Contributing 3 goals and 10 assists, his willingness to stretch defences created countless opportunities for teammates while also providing the tactical discipline demanded by Mikel’s system. His selfless performances often went under the radar, but inside the club his contribution has been hugely appreciated.
Ben Hamed Toure
Returning to GAIS for another spell, Ben Hamed Toure once again proved why he is so highly regarded throughout the V Sports network. The forward delivered 11 goals and 4 assists, combining intelligent movement with clinical finishing to consistently punish opposition defences. His familiarity with the club made him one of the dressing room’s leaders despite his relatively young age.
Omar Khedr
Joining during the summer transfer window from Aston Villa, Omar Khedr made an immediate impact. Despite only making 14 appearances, the Egyptian contributed 4 goals and 4 assists, offering moments of genuine quality whenever he stepped onto the pitch. His performances suggest an exciting future lies ahead.
Kparobo Arierhi
Leading the line with maturity beyond his years, Kparobo Arierhi matched Toure’s league tally with 11 goals. His physical presence, movement inside the penalty area and improving link-up play gave GAIS another consistent source of goals throughout the campaign. With European football now on the horizon, he looks capable of becoming one of Sweden’s standout forwards.
Another Step Forward for the Network
GAIS’ success is another example of the V Sports model working exactly as intended. Strategic loans from Aston Villa and Annecy strengthened the squad without blocking the development of GAIS’ own players. Young talents gained invaluable first-team experience in a competitive environment, while GAIS benefitted from players capable of immediately raising the level of the team. The result was a squad with genuine depth, tactical flexibility and healthy competition for places. Just as importantly, several of those loanees return to their parent clubs having significantly increased both their experience and market value. It is another success for the network’s collaborative approach.
