For the second consecutive season, Real Unión have achieved promotion. Just two years ago the club was competing in the fourth tier of Spanish football. Today, after successive promotions, the historic Basque club prepares for life in LaLiga Hypermotion, one step away from Spain’s top flight. Promotion alone would have represented another remarkable milestone in the V Sports project. Instead, it has become the catalyst for something even bigger. Following the club’s latest success, V Sports can officially confirm that it has exercised its option to acquire the remaining shares in Real Unión, making the club a wholly-owned member of the V Sports Football Network. The acquisition, completed for an undisclosed fee, marks another significant milestone in the long-term vision of building a connected football network capable of developing elite African talent while restoring proud historic clubs across Europe. For the first time since joining the project, every footballing decision at Real Unión will now be fully integrated into the wider V Sports philosophy.

Chairman Statement

Speaking following the completion of the takeover, V Sports Chairman Nassef Sawiris outlined why taking complete control of Real Unión was the natural next step.

“Real Unión represents everything this project stands for. It is a historic football club with incredible potential, passionate supporters and now a clear football identity. Following two promotions in two seasons we felt the time was right to complete the acquisition and bring the club fully into the V Sports family.”

“An undisclosed agreement has been reached to purchase the remaining shares, giving us complete ownership and allowing us to align every football decision with our long-term strategy. This isn’t simply an investment in one football club; it’s an investment in an important step of our player development pathway. We believe Real Unión will become one of the most valuable development environments in European football.”

“Promotion brings new challenges, but it also brings opportunity. Our ambition is not simply to survive—we want to establish Real Unión as a respected club in Spanish football while continuing to create opportunities for African talent to reach the very highest level.”

A Club That Needed Rebuilding

The celebrations following promotion quickly gave way to reality. Success had come at a price. The squad that had earned promotion through the play-offs had effectively been dismantled within weeks of the season ending. Numerous senior professionals departed following the expiry of their contracts, while almost every influential loan player returned to their parent clubs across the V Sports network. Samuel Eto’o and his coaching staff suddenly found themselves with the framework of a football club rather than a competitive football squad. The timing could hardly have been more difficult. LaLiga Hypermotion is one of Europe’s most demanding second divisions, with clubs boasting vastly superior resources, experienced squads and years of continuity. Real Unión had neither. Instead, they faced the prospect of assembling almost an entirely new starting eleven in a matter of weeks. It was immediately clear that survival would require intelligent recruitment rather than expensive recruitment.

The club simply could not compete financially with many of their new rivals.

Enter Louis Yao Kouassi

The first major decision under the new ownership was arguably the most important. Rather than beginning with players, V Sports chose to strengthen the structure behind the scenes. Louis Yao Kouassi was appointed as the club’s new Director of Football, arriving with more than four decades of football knowledge and, perhaps more importantly, an exceptional understanding of the West African market.

Across the V Sports project, recruitment has always been the foundation of success. Finding undervalued players before the rest of Europe discovers them has allowed clubs throughout the network to compete with teams possessing far greater financial resources. Kouassi’s appointment was designed to ensure that philosophy continued at Real Unión. At 61 years of age, the Ivorian brings a wealth of contacts across Ivory Coast, Senegal, Mali, Ghana and beyond, with years spent identifying players capable of making the jump into European football. His brief was simple. Build an entire squad capable of surviving LaLiga Hypermotion. Do it quickly. Do it sustainably. And do it without compromising the financial future of the club. To support that mission, V Sports invested €2.5 million into Real Unión immediately following the takeover, with €1 million allocated towards transfer spending and the remainder strengthening the club’s infrastructure and operating budget. Even with that investment, every euro needed to be spent wisely. There would be no marquee signings. No established stars. Instead, the recruitment department focused on players entering their prime years or outstanding young talents ready to take the next step. The objective was clear: assemble a hungry, athletic squad with resale value that perfectly reflected the V Sports identity.

Rebuilding From The Back

Every successful side begins with defensive stability, and Kouassi’s first task was to construct an entirely new defensive unit.

Goalkeepers

Pacome Konaté arrives as Real Unión’s new number one after a rapid rise through Ivorian football.

Still only twenty years old, Konaté has already experienced four different clubs in four seasons, each representing another step upwards in his development. Standing at 6’5″, he immediately gives Real Unión a commanding physical presence inside the penalty area. His exceptional aerial reach, bravery and reflexes stood out throughout the scouting process, while his decision-making suggests a goalkeeper capable of continuing his development at a much higher level. Behind a young defence, his ability to dominate crosses and organise those in front of him will be invaluable.

Providing competition is Yoann Yao.

Rather than simply signing an experienced backup, Kouassi again targeted youth and potential. Yao’s excellent agility, concentration and kicking ability offer Samuel Eto’o genuine competition for places while ensuring there is no significant drop in quality should injuries occur. Instead of buying experience, Real Unión have invested in two goalkeepers who can potentially develop together over several seasons.

Central Defence

Building a new partnership in central defence is never easy, but Kouassi believes he has reunited one capable of growing together for years.

Djinan Koné arrives after establishing himself as one of the standout defenders in the MTN Ligue 1 over the past two seasons. His blend of pace, positioning and physicality perfectly suits modern football, while his natural fitness and acceleration allow him to defend large spaces behind the defensive line.

Alongside him will be Thierry Hindé.

Rather than searching for two completely different profiles, Kouassi deliberately reunited the partnership that had already proven itself in Ivory Coast. Hindé complements Koné brilliantly, bringing dominance in the air through outstanding jumping reach while also displaying aggressive defending and excellent positional awareness. The hope is that chemistry developed in Africa can immediately translate into Spanish football, reducing the adaptation period usually associated with a completely new defensive partnership.

Wing Backs

Modern football demands attacking full-backs, and Samuel Eto’o’s system relies heavily upon them providing width.

On the left, Nabi Koné offers an exciting combination of defensive reliability and attacking quality. Comfortable carrying the ball forward, possessing an excellent first touch and dangerous crossing ability, he looks perfectly suited to operating as an attacking wing-back.

On the opposite flank, Vaboué Doumbia brings explosive athleticism. His acceleration and agility immediately caught the attention of V Sports scouts, while his performances during ASEC Mimosas’ title-winning campaign convinced the recruitment department he was ready for European football. At only nineteen years old, Doumbia combines defensive aggression with genuine attacking potential, making him one of the most exciting young full-backs to arrive at the club.

Together they represent exactly the type of energetic wide defenders around which Samuel Eto’o wants to build.

The Engine Room

If the defence provides stability, the midfield must provide identity.

Kouassi’s midfield recruitment reflects that philosophy perfectly.

Bala Keita arrives to anchor the midfield after an outstanding season with ASEC Mimosas. A former Fiorentina youth player, Keita combines European experience with African athleticism. His passing range, physical strength, stamina and vision make him the natural holding midfielder tasked with shielding the defence while dictating the tempo of games.

Ahead of him, Chadrac Kakou brings intelligence and composure. Having assisted seven goals in the MTN Ligue 1, Kakou demonstrated an ability to influence matches from deeper positions. His first touch, passing and decision-making suggest a player capable of controlling possession rather than simply winning it back.

Perhaps the most intriguing arrival is Francis Gomez.

After two years developing within Everton’s system, the Gambian midfielder arrives looking for regular first-team football. Leadership, aggression and relentless work rate define his game, while his excellent tackling and passing provide Samuel Eto’o with another midfielder capable of competing physically against stronger Spanish opposition. Collectively, the trio provides balance.

Keita protects.

Kakou creates.

Gomez competes.

It is a midfield built for intensity rather than reputation.

Pace, Width and Creativity

Replacing the attacking output lost from departing loan players was another enormous challenge.

Souleymane Fofana arrives after establishing himself as one of ASEC’s brightest attacking prospects. Quick, direct and fearless, his acceleration, pace and crossing make him a constant threat in transition. V Sports believe his ceiling remains extremely high and that regular football in Spain could unlock another level to his game.

On the opposite wing arrives Elvis Zouhoule.

While Fofana offers explosive running, Zouhoule provides technical quality and creativity. His excellent determination, flair, technique and stamina suggest a player capable of creating chances in tight spaces while maintaining the intensity demanded by Eto’o’s system. The pair offer contrasting strengths but share one common characteristic—they are both still developing.

Rather than signing players at their peak, Real Unión are investing in footballers capable of growing with the club.

Leading The Line

Goals win matches. Finding them on a limited budget is perhaps the hardest task in football.

Rayan Cissé may prove to be Kouassi’s smartest piece of business. Still only eighteen years old, Cissé arrives after scoring nine league goals as a seventeen-year-old in Ivory Coast.Despite his age, he already displays the qualities associated with natural goalscorers.

Excellent finishing.

Outstanding movement.

Strong heading ability.

Excellent first touch.

He remains raw, but his ceiling is enormous.

Rather than expecting him to carry the goalscoring burden immediately, V Sports hope Samuel Eto’o can continue polishing one of Ivory Coast’s brightest young forwards.

Strength Through The Network

While permanent recruitment has rebuilt the foundations of the squad, the strength of the V Sports network has once again become one of Real Unión’s greatest advantages.

From Aston Villa arrives towering centre-back Modou Keba Cissé, bringing composure, athleticism and experience. Alongside him comes South African midfield prodigy Gomolemo Kekana, whose technical ability and tactical intelligence have long marked him as one of Aston Villa’s brightest prospects. Annecy contribute two highly talented central midfielders in Lazola Maku and Modibo Sissoko, both expected to compete immediately for starting places while continuing their development in a demanding Spanish environment. Vitória strengthen the attacking options considerably. Winger Vando Félix, fresh from another productive campaign in Portugal, brings creativity, direct running and proven end product, while striker Alioune Ndoye arrives hoping to continue the goalscoring form that made him one of the most exciting forwards in the African network. These loans are far more than temporary solutions. They represent one of the biggest competitive advantages available to Real Unión. Players gain valuable experience. Parent clubs accelerate development. Real Unión receives quality that would otherwise be financially impossible. The network continues to prove exactly why the V Sports model is unlike anything else in European football.

A Remarkable Summer’s Work

Considering the scale of the challenge facing Real Unión only weeks ago, the transformation has been extraordinary. Louis Yao Kouassi inherited a club with promotion celebrations still fresh in the memory but with barely enough senior players to field a competitive side. Within one transfer window, working with a budget of approximately €1.3 million, he has rebuilt virtually the entire squad. Every signing fits the V Sports philosophy. Every player possesses room to develop. Every transfer has been made with both sporting ambition and financial sustainability in mind. Nobody inside the club is under any illusions about the task ahead. LaLiga Hypermotion is unforgiving, and survival remains the immediate objective. But there is genuine optimism around Real Unión once again. The squad is younger. It is faster. It is deeper. Most importantly, it has been assembled with a clear identity rather than short-term fixes. If this group can grow together over the coming months, the club believes this may be remembered not simply as a survival season, but as the beginning of Real Unión’s long-term establishment within Spanish professional football. The work now moves from the boardroom to the pitch. Samuel Eto’o has been given a squad built around the V Sports vision. The challenge is enormous, but so too is the opportunity. One more successful season could take Real Unión from newly promoted survivors to genuine contenders for the future.
