When John Obi Mikel arrived at GAIS midway through last season, he inherited a squad lacking both depth and a clear long-term identity. The immediate objective was simple: stabilise the club in the Allsvenskan while beginning the process of transforming GAIS into the first European destination for the brightest young African talent identified by the V Sports recruitment network. A respectable eleventh-place finish provided the platform. With a full pre-season now complete and the club entering the 2026 campaign with a much clearer vision, this unique Swedish transfer window has allowed us to continue building something that extends far beyond the first team. While much of European football has now closed its winter transfer window, Sweden’s calendar gives GAIS an opportunity unlike any other club within the V Sports family. Rather than waiting until the summer, we can continue identifying and recruiting elite young African prospects before Europe’s biggest clubs even enter the market. It is a competitive advantage that perfectly complements the wider V Sports strategy. This latest recruitment drive is another significant step towards making GAIS the ideal launching pad for Africa’s next generation.
Departures
Following the conclusion of the European transfer window, GAIS completed two further outgoing transfers worth a combined €2.35 million. The biggest departure saw Gustav Lundgren leave Gothenburg after years of loyal service. The experienced 30-year-old Swedish midfielder completed a €2 million move to Malmö FF, providing both the player and club with an excellent opportunity. Lundgren had been an important figure at GAIS, but with John Obi Mikel reshaping the midfield around younger, more athletic players capable of fitting the V Sports playing philosophy, the timing felt right for both parties. His departure also created valuable space within both the wage structure and squad for emerging talent. Blessing Asumang became the first African player in the V Sports era to earn a significant transfer away from GAIS. The now 19-year-old Ghanaian winger joined Malmö FF in a €350,000 deal after impressing throughout the second half of last season. Asumang arrived before the current recruitment structure was fully established, but under John Obi Mikel he showed enough quality to attract interest from one of Sweden’s strongest clubs. Malmö’s second-place finish and qualification for the UEFA Europa League made the opportunity difficult for both player and club to ignore. Internally, extensive discussions were held across the V Sports network. While Blessing had undoubtedly developed well, the recruitment department ultimately felt he was unlikely to make the jump required to eventually play for Vitória or Aston Villa. Rather than standing in his way, the decision was made to accept an excellent offer that represents a fantastic next step in his own career. Importantly, the deal also includes a 40% sell-on clause, ensuring that if Blessing exceeds expectations and secures a major move elsewhere in Europe, GAIS and the wider V Sports network will continue to benefit from his development.

New Arrivals
Donatien Bama

The first arrival of the Swedish window perfectly encapsulates the type of player V Sports is now targeting. Standing at over six feet tall, Donatien Bama arrives from Burkina Faso as an imposing eighteen-year-old central defender with the physical tools to become a dominant presence. While technically still developing, the recruitment team were particularly impressed by his outstanding defensive instincts. His 16 Marking, 15 Tackling, 15 Positioning and excellent aerial ability suggest a defender who already understands the fundamentals of his position despite his young age. Rather than relying purely on athleticism, Bama shows maturity in reading danger before it develops, something the scouting department values highly. There is still refinement needed with the ball at his feet, but GAIS provides exactly the type of environment where those aspects of his game can improve through regular first-team football. He is viewed as a defender capable of growing into the heart of the defence over the coming seasons.
Yaya Dieme

Replacing outgoing winger Blessing Asumang was never going to be straightforward, but V Sports believe Yaya Dieme possesses an even higher long-term ceiling. The eighteen-year-old Senegal international arrives from Strasbourg having already gained recognition within Senegal’s youth setup. Although still raw, his profile immediately stood out during the scouting process. Dieme combines impressive technical quality with outstanding work ethic. His 14 First Touch, 14 Technique, 14 Teamwork and 13 Work Rate make him an ideal player for the aggressive, high-energy football John Obi Mikel wants his wide players to produce. Unlike many young wingers who rely purely on pace, Dieme already shows intelligence in combination play and retains possession well under pressure. His ability to operate across the front line also provides valuable tactical flexibility. Rather than simply replacing Asumang, the recruitment team believe Dieme has the potential to become an even more complete footballer.
Abdessalem Akid

Another addition to strengthen the defensive core sees Tunisian centre-back Abdessalem Akid arrive from CS Sfaxien. Still only eighteen years old, Akid brings a calmness that immediately caught the attention of the V Sports scouting department. While many defenders of his age rely on physicality, Akid’s biggest strengths lie in anticipation and decision-making. His profile highlights 14 Decisions, 13 Anticipation, excellent pace and strong athleticism, alongside solid defensive attributes that provide an excellent foundation for further development. The recruitment department were particularly encouraged by his composure when defending large spaces, an increasingly important quality for centre-backs playing in aggressive pressing systems. Alongside Donatien Bama, Akid gives GAIS another young central defender capable of developing within the network over several seasons before potentially progressing higher up the V Sports pyramid.
Modou Sène
ASCE Linguère | €72,000
The final addition of the window may prove to be one of the smartest pieces of business completed anywhere in the network. Signed from Senegalese side ASCE Linguère, Modou Sène arrives as an eighteen-year-old left-back possessing an exceptionally balanced profile. Rather than excelling in one particular area, Sène already demonstrates competence across almost every aspect required of a modern full-back. His 12 Tackling, 11 Dribbling, 11 Technique, 10 Crossing, 14 Natural Fitness and 14 Work Rate provide an outstanding platform for future development.
His ability to contribute in both defensive and attacking phases made him a unanimous recommendation from the recruitment department. With modern football demanding full-backs capable of influencing every phase of play, Sène has all the raw ingredients to become exactly that.
A Different Transfer Window
This Swedish transfer window has highlighted exactly why GAIS occupies such an important position within the V Sports structure. Unlike Aston Villa or Vitória, whose immediate priorities revolve around competing for European qualification and trophies, GAIS has evolved into something different. It has become the first proving ground for the network’s African recruitment strategy. Every player signed during this window and indeed the January additions already integrated into the squad, is beginning the same journey. Sweden offers a league that is competitive without being overwhelming, an environment where young players can adapt to European football, learn new tactical concepts, experience different cultures and, most importantly, play regular senior football. That opportunity is invaluable. Instead of expecting eighteen-year-olds to jump directly into the intensity of the Premier League or the pressure of Portugal’s Primeira Liga, they can develop naturally within a club fully committed to their progression. Every training session, every appearance and every season spent at GAIS becomes another stepping stone towards reaching the higher levels of the V Sports network. It is no coincidence that all four additions this window were identified centrally by the V Sports recruitment department. Months of scouting across Africa have produced a carefully selected group of players whose personalities, athletic profiles and long-term potential align with the network’s philosophy. These are not opportunistic signings; they are part of a coordinated development pathway designed years in advance. As the V Sports project continues to mature, GAIS is becoming exactly what it was always intended to be: the first European home for Africa’s brightest young talent. If these players continue their development in Sweden, the next step could eventually be Vitória, and for the very best, perhaps one day Aston Villa. The pathway is becoming clearer with every transfer window, and this latest group of recruits represents another exciting chapter in that long-term vision.
